Grip

in Film and Video Glossary, Film Crew Roles on 2023-02-06

“Grip” refers to the technicians in film and video production responsible for physically supporting the camera and lighting equipment. They play a crucial role in creating the desired look and feel of a film by adjusting the lighting, rigging and positioning of cameras and other equipment.

Grips are skilled craftsmen who work with the Director of Photography (DP) and Gaffer to set up and maintain the necessary equipment for each shot. They use a range of tools, such as cranes, dollies, and tripods, to position cameras and lights for maximum effect. They also handle a variety of tasks on set, such as setting up lighting, constructing set pieces, and moving heavy equipment.

Grips are essential for creating smooth and stable camera movements, and for adjusting the lighting to achieve the desired mood and atmosphere. They must be able to work efficiently and creatively under pressure, as they often have limited time to set up and execute complex shots.
