Room Tone

in Audio Elements, Film and Video Glossary on 2023-02-12

Room Tone” is the natural ambient sound of a location, captured during filming. This audio recording captures the ambient sounds of the room, such as air conditioning, background chatter, and other environmental noises, which helps to create a consistent audio track for a film.

A room tone is usually recorded for a few seconds, immediately after the completion of dialogue, to provide sound editors with a reference for consistent background sound levels in post-production. By having a room tone available, audio engineers can replace any unwanted noises, such as production crew talking or equipment noise, with the room tone during editing.
